A Message from the Director of Training-Dr. Michael Williams, Ph.D

Dr. Michael Williams is a veteran of the United States Army and born to immigrant parents from the Caribbean. Dr. Williams has worked for decades in the fields of mental health, substance use, and HIV/AIDS.  Dr. Williams’s current training positions and academic appointments are with Care Republic Training Institute, as the Principal Deputy Director, with Samaritan Village as a Trainer, and with the Graduate School of Human Services and Education at Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) as an Adjunct Professor.  Dr. Williams also teaches in the CASAC Program at MCNY.

Dr. Williams has extensive past formal teaching experience as Department Chair and Professor at the Mandl School, College of Allied Health, as Adjunct faculty at Rutgers University (New Brunswick) where he taught English in the Writing Program, at Kingsborough Community College in the Department of Health and Human Services, at  Queensborough Community College in the Health, Physical Education, and Dance Department, at Mercy University in the Social and Behavioral Sciences, and at Alfred University.

A seasoned clinician, Dr. Williams still works in direct care at the novel behavioral health urgent care working with juvenile offenders from the Westchester County Juvenile Detention Centers and is authorized by the Encompass Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado to implement the evidenced-based, integrated treatment for the adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions and conduct groups designed to encourage personal growth, life skills, social skills, and responsibility.

His education journey began at  Bronx Community College (CUNY) where he received his AAS Degree, his BA in English Literature from Queens College (CUNY), his MS in counseling from Long Island University, his Master of Public Health (MPH) from Hunter College (CUNY), and he received his Doctorate Degree in Counseling Psychology from Regent University.  Dr. Williams’s dissertation is entitled, “Program Resource Development of an Addiction Counselor Ethics Curriculum for Mental Health Workers in East Harlem.”  Dr. Williams has pursued a second doctorate (Dr.PH) and is working on his dissertation entitled, “The Interface Between Being Foreign-Born with the BCG Vaccine with the Health Care System in the United States.”

Dr. Williams is a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Master Counselor in New York State and a Master Certified Health Education Specialist, certified by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing Inc. He has pursued the Advanced Certification in Mental Health Counseling at LIU to sit for the licensure exam to become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC).

Dr. Williams published a peer-reviewed academic journal article in 2015 entitled, “Health Education Practice: Formative Evaluation of Violence Prevention Program” in the Online Journal of Social Sciences Research.  His current project is working on his first book, entitled, “Send Them Victorious” which examines the public health phenomenology of the Great Migration of black Americans from the south to the north.

Dr. Williams’s greatest joy in life is attending his granddaughter’s high school cheerleading events where she is the captain of her team.
